Climbing, particularly rock climbing is an increasingly popular sport across the UK and there are plenty of climbing clubs across the country. The best way to gain an introduction to the sport is to visit an indoor climbing centre, most of which have regular sessions offering guideline techniques to climbing and belaying as well as having basic equipment for hire. The British Mountaineering website has a search engine for walls and indoor climbing centres across the UK. There are also a number of climbing schools around the UK that offer personal instruction on the mechanics and techniques of climbing. However, climbing always comes with a risk and it is not advisable for beginners to climb without supervision.
In addition to climbing centres, there are numerous climbing holidays which are a good way for beginners to gain an intensive introduction to the sport. The Abc of Rock Climbing website has links to climbing and mountaineering holidays in Britain and worldwide.
